The Earth has been constantly changing over time, and the Thames & Kosmos Volcanoes & Earthquakes science kit demonstrates this phenomenon with eleven fun and educational experiments. Extensive cross-sections and detailed information provide all of the background knowledge kids will need to know about how volcanoes and earthquakes are formed and how they change the shape of the land masses on our planet.
There is no better way to understand how a volcano works than by causing one to erupt. After assembling a volcanic formation with an internal bottle lava system, kids will create unique volcanic lava that oozes out of the formation’s crater with a chemical reaction. Different than other volcano kits, this lava actually dries and forms a new layer. In a more true to life fashion, every time the volcano erupts, it continues to grow larger.
On the included die-cut sheets are three really fun, hands-on experiments. Kids can complete a plate tectonics puzzle that actually pieces together along the Earth’s plate boundaries. Plus, it shows all of the active volcanoes on the planet, most of which happen to be right on those boundaries. The other experiments allow kids to fold together a dodecahedron shaped globe that offers a different view at the world’s volcanoes and a volcano learning wheel that teaches about the most famous volcanoes in the world.
Earthquakes and tsunamis make up the louder of the experiments in the Volcanoes & Earthquakes kit. Books become shifting plates and wooden blocks become representations of buildings as children learn about earthquake safe construction. As children put together their own seismograph, they will learn about the Richter scale and note locations of some of the worst earthquakes in history. Small scale destruction in the Thames & Kosmos science kit will give kids a clear understanding of these two powerful forces.
