We bought it for a five year old,she's happy with it so we didn't want to hassel with returning it. It's very durable. My disappointment is the the prepared slides are not of real bugs - they are less-than-life-size photos of bugs. For example: The bee picture is microscopic,so even after it's magnified 5X,it's still smaller than a real bee.

My son really loves the scope,but I agree with the mum above - the images are synthetic. Also,I have not been able to find any additional slides so you really are limited to only the 12 slides that come with the scope. Better to buy a more real scope and have unlimited possibilities.
