The Smithsonian Crystal Growing Kits we purchased allowed our Learners to use the scientific method to determine whether crystals really grow,by dictionary terms,continue growing,all have flat sides and grow on any type of surfaces. The instructions were easy to implement and the informational booklets evoked a lot of ooohs and aaaahs,as did our resulting crystals.

Good that you have 3 different types of crystals so that if one doesn't turn out you can try again. My 7 year old son created the first crystal and it took a little longer than expected but eventually he did get a crystal. He went to rinse it off and it started tomelt . We managed to save most of it but the color is faded. Make sure all surfaces are covered when making these as the color is a very strong dye and will tint everything it comes into contact with (fingers,clothes,etc). He especially liked the science aspect of this kit and the goggles and measuring cups. Watching something grow out ofnothing became a daily event as he would take it down and check his growing crystal to see what progress had been made. Display nicely on a piece of mirror.
