Young Scientists Club Kits: Designed by a Scientist-Mom, Tested by Kids, Approved by All

As a scientist and mother of five, Esther Novis was eager to find a summer camp experience where her children could explore the world of science, but when she tried to find such a camp back in 1999, options were slim. Rather than give up on the idea, Novis decided to create her own summer science camp for her kids and their friends.

Novis's "camp" was such a success her friends in other parts of the country expressed interest in duplicating the experience for their own children, so she began packaging her camp activities as science kits and mailing them to her friends. She soon discovered her easy-to-use, exceptionally engaging kits designed for children from 5 to 12 years old filled a much needed void in the market, and The Young Scientists Club was born.

The business has grown steadily over the years, winning multiple awards and the approval of children and their parents around the globe. Novis continues to introduce new kits each year, but the unique qualities that made the Young Scientists Club an instant hit remain intact: "I'm a parent and an educator first," says Novis. "That's how the kits are designed, with parents in mind."

The first thing most parents notice about Young Scientists Club kits is how easy they are to use and enjoy. "We put everything you need in the box," says Novis. As a mom, she understands how disappointing it can be to open a big box with an enticing picture on the front only to find there's not much inside. "We fill our boxes up," she says. "We don't sell a lot of air."

The kits include detailed instructions for parents, easy-to-perform experiments, and lab sheets to record results. "I spend a lot of time making sure what the children learn is age appropriate," says Novis. "There's enough that they'll learn but not so much that they're overloaded and get nothing out of it. That's what parents always find the highlight of our kits. Kids actually do learn as they're playing."

Novis still runs her summer camp in Rhode Island for two weeks each year, and it's the campers who do much of her product testing. "All our products are truly kid tested," she says.

The newest line of Young Scientists Kits is the Magic School Bus line which Novis created in partnership with Scholastic. "They felt our company was the best fit to do kits that go along with the books and DVDs and TV series," she says. "I'm not big on licensing (deals), but this was exactly what we're doing."

In 2007 Novis introduced the first Magic School Bus kits: The World of Germs, Mysteries of Rainbows, and Journey into the Human Body. This year she followed with Soaring into Flight and The Secrets of Space.

Another exciting new kit is Star Pilot Space Kit, an astronomy kit that includes a newly designed constellation finder Novis developed in conjunction with a team of professors at Brown University.

With a Masters degree in Biology from Harvard University, years of experience teaching high school science classes, and five kids of her own, it's easy to see why Novis's science kits are so unique. Not only does she know how to engage young children – both boys and girls –in the exciting world of science, she knows how to make scientific discovery easy and stress-free for busy parents like us!

At DiscoverThis.com, we're huge fans of the Young Scientists Club, and we're proud to encourage others to join the club with our extensive line of Young Scientists Club kits!
